Course objectives

Learning Outcomes: students acquire useful tools for the study of the morphology and syntax of the Portuguese language, continuing and deepening the process already begun in the previous year. 1.Knowledge and understanding: students are able to recognize and analyze the elements that make up a word and a sentence in Portuguese; 2. Applied knowledge and understanding: students are able to apply, in a comparative key, the knowledge acquired to wider contexts, such as that of Romance languages or, more generally, European languages; students are able to reflect critically on the linguistic context of reference; 3. Making judgements: students are able to reflect autonomously on the morphological and syntactic structure of the Portuguese language; 4. Communication: students are able to use the specific lexicon of the discipline, both in Portuguese and in Italian, with particular reference to morphology and syntax; 5. Learning skills: students engage in directed reading and pursue further studies applying the competences that they have acquired to other subjects in their field of studies.

Course program
Starting from the early reflections grammatical in Portuguese, published during the sixteenth century, and continuing analyzing synthetically the linguistic and grammatical writings of later centuries, the course aims to provide useful information to morphological and syntactic structure of the language. These concepts will then be applied to texts of twentieth-century Brazilian and Portuguese context, with particular attention to the representation of modes and registers of the living language and orality. We will focus finally, always starting from the same text, on issues related to the theory and practice of translation. The course also includes a "lettorato" workshop, held by a native speaker. Students can choose independently whether to follow the lectures with a Portuguese native speaker or with a Brazilian native speaker. Teaching mode
The course is divided into two parts: 1) linguistics module (taught by the professor) and 2) "lettorato" (held by native speakers). 1) The linguistics module is mainly structured through lectures. A first introductory section will be devoted to the morphology and syntax of the Portuguese language and its variants. A second section will be dedicated to the history of grammatical treatises in Portugal. A final section of the course will be dedicated to the translation exercise. 2) Students can autonomously choose whether to follow the "lettorato" with a native Portuguese speaking collaborator or with a native Brazilian speaking collaborator.
Frequency
The linguistics module is semester long and provides two lessons for two hours a week. The linguistic workshop is annual and provides two lessons for two hours a week.
Exam mode
The final exam includes three tests: 1) written test of "lettorato"; 2) oral test of "lettorato"; 3) oral examination with the professor (linguistics module); The two oral tests must be supported in the same day. Each of the three tests will be evaluated individually, the first two through a judgment, the last one by a vote in thirtieths. The final grade (always in thirtieths) will be attributed by the professor taking into account the three results obtained. The written examination of the readership includes interpretation, grammar, vocabulary and written production. The oral examination of the "lettorato" reads the level of ability in oral communication. To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30. During the oral exam related to the linguistics module, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the morphosyntaxes of the Portuguese language and its variants, also in a translational key, and be able to perform correct analysis of morphemes, phrases and syntactic structures in Portuguese texts. To obtain a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student, in addition to obtaining the highest marks in the "lettorato" tests, must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in logical and coherent way.
