Course objectives

The course aims to provide the fundamental notions of the media sciences and detailed studies about information media and advertisements, collaborative productions of enviroments and materials of communication on the web.

Course program
The course introduces the essential tools and concepts of mediology, with constant reference to the studies of Walter Benjamin (on images and shock) and Marshall McLuhan (on the medium, narcosis, and configurations). The development of a theoretical lexicon of communication is aimed at analyzing imaginaries and narratives from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, encompassing the novel, newspapers, photography, and television series.

To sit the examination, students are required to study the following texts: Rafele, A., Lacrime di vetro. I romanzi e la metropoli, Giulio Perrone, Roma, 2024; McCormick, S., The Chattering Mind: A Conceptual History of Everyday Talk, University of Chicago Press, 2020 (Parts I and III).
