PORTUGUESE AND BRASILIAN LANGUAGE III

Course objectives

After having worked on the history of the language, on phonetic-phonological aspects, morphological and syntactic aspects, this course will complete the basic studies of the Portuguese language, studying the language from the perspective of discourse analysis. It will therefore deal with aspects of textual linguistics, semantics and pragmatics, always paying particular attention to translation studies. Thus, by the end of the course, students will have a knowledge of aspects relating to the overall meaning of a given text, broken down into its various levels of explicit and implicit meaning. They will thus have a command of complex notions applied to diverse text typologies. In the same way, students will acquire competence relevant for translating literary or technical texts, or even advertising texts, and so on. Finally, by the end of the course students will be able to link the theoretical component to the component focused on practical analysis of the cases in question; they will also develop their knowledge via the bibliography and the case studies provided as a model and methodology throughout the course.

Course program
The course will be dedicated to an in-depth knowledge of the Portuguese language in three specific advanced fields: textual linguistics, semantics and pragmatics. During the course, various texts in Portuguese, both literary and non-literary, belonging to different contexts and countries, and their variants will be analysed. Part of the course will be aimed at deepening the translation techniques already introduced in previous years. Contents of the "lettorato" workshop: Tipos de texto abordados: artigos de jornal ou revista, texto de opinião, entrevista, texto narrativo, conto, CV, letras de canções, sinopses de filmes Itens gramaticais abordados: . tempos compostos (Pretérito Perfeito Composto do Conjuntivo, Pretérito Mais-Que-Perfeito Composto do Conjuntivo, Condicional Composto, Futuro Perfeito do Conjuntivo); . orações condicionais de tipo 3; . verbos regidos por preposição. Itens gramaticais revistos: . tempos verbais (com especial incidência nos tempos do conjuntivo e na distinção entre uso do Indicativo ou Conjuntivo); formas nominais do verbo: Gerúndio, Infinitivo, Particípio Passado; . orações, em particular orações subordinadas condicionais (tipo 1 e 2), causais (“porque, por, como, na medida em que, devido a, dado que, já que, …”), concessivas (“embora, apesar de, mesmo que, ainda que, por mais que….” e concessivascom repetição do verbo), temporais (“assim que, logo que, quando, enquanto”), comparativas (“como, conforme, mais/menos do que, ….”) e finais (“para que, a fim de que, para, a fim de”); . preposições; . formação de palavras – prefixos e sufixos; . mesóclise; . palavras sinónimas e antónimas; . palavras homónimas, homófonas, homógrafas e parónimas. Frequency
The linguistics module is semester-long and comprises one two-hour lecture per week. The "lettorato" is semester-long and consists of two two-hour lectures per week.
Exam mode
The final exam includes three tests: 1) written test of "lettorato"; 2) oral test of "lettorato"; 3) oral examination with the professor (linguistics module); The two oral tests must be supported in the same day. All parts of the examination will be conducted in Portuguese. Each of the three tests will be evaluated individually, the first two through a judgment, the last one by a vote in thirtieths. The final grade (always in thirtieths) will be attributed by the professor taking into account the three results obtained. The written examination of the readership includes interpretation, grammar, vocabulary and written production. The oral examination of the "lettorato" reads the level of ability in oral communication. To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30. In the oral examination relating to the language module, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course and of the relevant bibliography. In order to obtain a mark of 30/30 cum laude, the student, in addition to having obtained the highest marks in the "lettorato" tests, must demonstrate that he/she has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics dealt with during the course, and of the relevant bibliography, being able to link them together in a logical and coherent manner.
Lesson mode
The course is divided into two parts: 1) linguistics module (taught by the professor) and 2) lectures (taught by native speakers). 1) The linguistics module is mainly structured through lectures. A first part will be devoted to the presentation of the principles of text linguistics, accompanied by examples in Portuguese. Similarly, the areas of semantics and linguistic pragmatics will be covered. Finally, the application of the indicated areas to translation theory and practice will be addressed. 2) Students can choose independently whether to follow the lectureship with a native speaker of Portuguese or with a native speaker of Brazilian.
