Classical Philology Advanced

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Classical Philology, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with the capacity to investigate a classical literary work from an historical, linguistic and critical point of view.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
Classes will discuss a selection of modern works in English on classical authors, both Greek and Roman. We shall read selected chapters from books written by prominent scholars of the past alongside more recent works that offer new insights into the complexity of the classical world. Topics may include extracts from contributions by P. Parsons, C. S. Kraus e J. G. Frazer. Lessons will be in English.
Prerequisites
A knowledge of English at intermediate level. Knowledge of Greek and Latin at intermediate level. Knowledge of basic notions of textual criticism and of the history of classical philology.

Teaching mode
The course will consist of lectures and in-class exercises.
Frequency
Students who are unable to attend classes should contact the teacher.
Exam mode
The assessment will be made by means of an oral test in English at the end of the course. The test will assess the degree of basic knowledge acquired and the ability of the students to communicate it. The minimum threshold to pass the exam is 18/30: to achieve this score the student must demonstrate that he has reached a sufficient knowledge of all the topics of the course and be able to present it in basic English. To achieve the maximum score (30/30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course and that he/she is able to present them in an appropriate language.
