Course objectives
This course aims to bring students to a high level of translation theory and practice. These scientific skills, applied to specific texts, are meant to cultivate the ability to develop a thesis on a topic chosen in the field of linguistics (also contrastive) or translation. Proficiency in written and oral skills in English language aimed at reaching the C1.2 level.

Course program
The course will focus on audiovisual translation, with an emphasis on translation for accessibility, in particular the translation of subtitles for the deaf and audiodescription for the blind. Lessons will provide a theoretical framework but students will also be guided through practical exercises of translation, audiodescription and analysis. The audiovisual texts on which students will work are adaptations of the classics of English literature. Being fundamentally a form of intralinguistic translation (and, in the case of audio description, also intersemiotic translation), the course is suitable also for non-Italian students.
This course needs to be integrated by the lettorato test for second year magistrale (see lettori CLA pages). Erasmus students do not need to follow the lettorato course but will have extra material to study.
Prerequisites
A level of English suitable to understand lessons given in English. However, please see "Programme" for specific information.

Frequency
attendance recommended: audiovisual material will be watched and discussed during the lessons
Exam mode
Written test with open question on the texts included in the bibliography and a translation and/or linguistic analysis of a short text. The lettorato test includes an oral and a written part.
