Portuguese and Brazilian Translation - Advanced Course

Course objectives

This course aims to bring students to a high level of translation theory and practice. These scientific skills, applied to specific texts, are meant to cultivate the ability to develop a thesis on a topic chosen in the field of linguistics (also contrastive) or translation. Proficiency in the written and oral skills in Portuguese and Brazilian language aimed at reaching the C2 level.

Course program
The course will be devoted to a reflection on literary translation from Portuguese into Italian and from Portuguese Italian, analysing translations of texts from different periods and different contexts (specifically: Dante Alighieri, Luís Vaz de Camões, Mário de Andrade, Italo Calvino and José Luandino Vieira).

Frequency
The linguistics module is semester-long and comprises one two-hour lecture per week. The linguistic workshop is semester-long and consists of two two-hour lectures per week.
Exam mode
The final exam includes three tests: 1) written test of "lettorato"; 2) oral test of "lettorato"; 3) oral examination with the professor (translation module); The two oral tests must be supported in the same day. The written examination of the readership includes interpretation, grammar, vocabulary and written production. The oral examination of the "lettorato" reads the level of ability in oral communication. To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30. In the oral examination relating to the translation module, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course and of the relevant bibliography. In order to obtain a mark of 30/30 cum laude, the student, in addition to having obtained the highest marks in the "lettorato" tests, must demonstrate that he/she has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics dealt with during the course, and of the relevant bibliography, being able to link them together in a logical and coherent manner.
Lesson mode
The translation course (taught by the professor) is accompanied by language practice sessions (taught by native speakers). The course is mainly structured around lectures. Students can choose whether to attend language practice sessions with a native Portuguese speaker or a native Brazilian speaker.
