Course objectives

Students will know the scientific literature on the topics dealt with and will be able to comment on it critically; They will be able to formulate hypotheses pertaining to Germanic philology on the basis of the acquired analytical concepts and tools; They will be able to integrate their new knowledge with the previous ones in order to face the theoretical and practical complexity of acquired concepts; They will also manage to communicate knowledge entering in discussion with specialists of Germanic philological studies and with non-specialists. They will lastly be able to study self-managed or autonomous topics proposed during the course and will be encouraged to cultivate their own scientific interests independently.

Course program
This advanced class aims at resuming and enriching previously acquired knowledge with the deepening of the study of Germanic Linguistics, of one or more Old Germanic Languages and its texts. In particular, focus will be given to the development of the Anglosaxon area by reading, analyzing and translating one or more Old English texts.
Prerequisites
After a quick overview of the basics, the course deals with more complex topics, in linguistic, philological, and literary terms. Therefore, complete beginners are invited to contact the teacher to receive advice on their attendance.

Frequency
Classes take place usually in-person. Occasionally on-line lessons could be required due to unforeseeable reasons (eg. public transportation strikes or the like). Attendance is not mandatory but it is extremely encouraged.
Exam mode
Individual oral exam (min. 15/20 minutes) with questions on any parts in the program. Besides knowledge of the topics, also communicative skills, usage of the subject terminology and the ability to elaborate on the topics of the course are evaluated. A larger part of the test will concern textual analysis and commentary.
Lesson mode
Frontal lessons with presentation and discussion of topics also with slideshows or other (multi-medial or traditional) tools (later made available for individual study). Students intervention and questions are strongly encouraged and may stimulate further discussions.At times, participants may be required to actively participate in the lessons.
