Russian linguistics

Course objectives

A) Students will know the scientific literature on the topics dealt with and will be able to comment on it critically; B) they will be able to formulate linguistic hypotheses on the basis of the acquired analytical concepts and tools; C) they will be able to integrate their new knowledge with the previous ones in order to face the theoretical and practical complexity of acquired concepts; D) they also will manage to communicate knowledge entering in discussion with specialists of linguistic studies and non-specialists. E) They will lastly be able to study self-managed or autonomous topics proposed during the course and will be encouraged to cultivate their own scientific interests independently.

Course program
Course Description: This course explores the Russian language as a descendant of the Indo-European family, tracing its historical evolution and structural features. Emphasis is placed on the study of phonetics, phonology, and orthography, as well as on the origin and development of the Cyrillic alphabet. The course also examines the main morphological and grammatical characteristics of Russian and provides an overview of the historical formation and growth of its lexicon. Main Topics: The Russian language within the Indo-European context Phonetic and phonological systems of Russian Orthography and the history of the Cyrillic alphabet Morphological and grammatical structure The historical development of the Russian vocabulary
Prerequisites
Knowledge of linguistic terminology. Advanced knowledge of one modern European language. No prior knowledge of Russian is required.

Frequency
Attendance, though not mandatory, is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
At the midpoint of the course, an interim test will be held to assess the knowledge acquired. In December, each student will present a brief project illustrating the historical development of selected Italian loanwords in Russian and/or Russian loanwords in Italian.
