Welfare and healthcare in Republican Italy The development of the welfare state is a key aspect of Europe’s contemporary history and the expansion of healthcare services is a major part of this process. The aim of the course is to identify the key concepts, theories and actors of the welfare state, placing them in the history of the 20th century with particular attention to post-World War II Italy. The history of the Italian experience in the evolution of welfare, health and healthcare services will be set in the context of international policies, economic transformations, social dynamics, focusing on the political processes and the actors that have shaped Italy’s welfare. Particular attention will be paid to the decade of the 1970s in Italy.

Undergraduate level knowledge of XX century history. Competence in the use of sources and methodology of historical research; basic knowledge of historical, social, political and economic issues.

The evaluation consists of an oral exam. In particular, the following aspects will be assessed: in-depth knowledge of the topics managed in the texts to be studied, and the ability to analyze related specific contents (points 1-15); the ability to critically argue and discuss the topics studied (points 1-10); the ownership of language and the correct use of the historical lexicon (points 1-5).

Lectures based on a critical analysis of the texts to be studied. Active student participation is highly encouraged and will be solicited throughout the lessons
