Course objectives

The course will provide a in-depth vision of European history in its passage from the modern to contemporary. During a first phase, particular attention will be devoted to the impact of the state institutions, the Industrial revolution and the Enlightenment upon the following development of the idea of nations, the gradual decline of the empires and their replacement with the national states. In this context, a first section of the course will analyze in particular the dynamics of the international scenario and the birth of the first sovranational institutions such as the League of Nations. In a second phase the course will focus on more specific issues such as the national minority. question, the refugees, antisemitism in Europe and the process of decolonization. Students will be asked to explain, communicate and interpret the ideas and the historical phenomena. In addition to this, they will be instructed to carry out a documental and archival research in order to prove their maturity in analyzing the documents and frame the historical context of the research through a written text.

Course program
The course will be carried out through oral lessons and, conforming to the directives of the university, it could be also developed through digital instruments (online classes) through learning system. Students will be accompanied during the course through lessons and supplementary lectures and questionnaires in order to constantly facilitate the study through the entire semester.The course is articulated in 3 distinct phases. I. Introduction to European history in the passage from modern to contemporary age. Historical dynamics and main events in European history II. Analysis of specific topics such as religious tolerance, slavery, colonialism, minorities, antisemitism, international institutions and cooperation, in modern and contemporary times III. Personal research and work to be carried out by the student on documents and archives, even digital, on the topics of the course, and subsequent presentation of the work.
Prerequisites
Basic Knowledge of the main historical events and dynamics during modern and contemporary ages. Basic knowledge of European and world geography.

Frequency
Students will be considered as respecting the sufficient degree of constant attendance when present at least at 70% of the classes
Exam mode
The course will be held through oral lessons. The final part of the course will include a research to be decided together with the teacher accordingly to the interests of the student, and within the context of the course.
