The course is held in the first semester of the fourth year. At the end of the teaching program the student will be able to diagnose gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic and endocrine diseases and to give therapeutic indications

Analisi degli aspetti anatomopatologici delle principali patologie dell’apparato gastroenterologico (pancreas, esofago, stomaco, intestino tenue, colon, fegato e vie biliari) in particolare: epatiti acute e croniche, malattia da accumulo di grasso epatico non alcolica (NAFLD), cirrosi epatica, epatocarcinoma ed altre lesioni occupanti spazio, cirrosi biliari e colangite sclerosante, pancreatiti acute e croniche, neoplasie pancreatiche, malattia da reflusso gastro-esofageo, neoplasie esofagee; gastriti, malattia peptica, neoplasie gastriche; malassorbimento e malattia celiaca, sindrome dell’intestino irritabile, poliposi e cancro del colon, diverticolosi del colon, malattie infiammatorie intestinali. Analisi degli aspetti anatomopatologici delle principali patologie degli organi endocrini (ipofisi, tiroide, paratiroidi, surrene e pancreas endocrino) in particolare aspetti anatomopatologici delle malattie dell’ipofisi, iperplasia tiroidea, tiroiditi, neoplasie della tiroide, patologia neoplastica e non neoplastica delle paratiroidi, patologia neoplastica e non neoplastica del surrene, patologia delle insule pancreatiche.

Course program
Gastrointestinal tract: disease of the esophagus (esophagitis and Barrett esophagus). Disease of the stomach (gastritis; peptic ulcer disease). Disease of small and large intestines: malabsorption syndromes; inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, overlap colitis); vascular disorders (ischemic bowel disease). Disease of liver and biliary tract: infectious disorders (viral hepatitis, bacterial, parasitic and helmintic infections); alcoholic liver disease; metabolic liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis, hemochromatosis, Wilson disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency); liver cirrhosis; “vanishing bile duct syndrome” (primary biliary cirrhosis, sclerosing cholangitis, chronic liver rejection); nodular hyperplasia, colelithiasis, colecystitis. Disease of the exocrine pancreas (pancreatitis) Endocrine system: pituitary gland (adenomas). Thyroid gland: thyroiditis (Hashimoto thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, lymphocytic thyroiditis); diffuse and multinodular goiter; benign and malignant tumors. Endocrine pancreas (diabetes mellitus; endocrine pancreatic neoplasms); adrenal glands (pathologic substrates of adrenal cortex insufficiency and hyperfunction; neoplasms of adrenal cortex and medulla); multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes. Neuroendocrine tumors of the Gastro-intestinal tract (NET and NEC)

Basic knowledge of gross and microscopic anatomy, physiology and general pathology
