Course objectives

General aims. The Laboratory, starting from the main concepts of modern psychosomatics, aims to promote the development of the ability to read, critically analyze and discuss clinical cases and the possible applications of psychology and its instruments in different healthcare contexts. Specific aims Knowledge and understanding Starting from the description of a classic psychosomatic approach, the student will develop professional skills on the role of psychology in healthcare contexts. Through work in small groups, role playing and critical discussion activities regarding clinical cases about work in co-presence psychologist and general practitioner as well as clinical case in multidisciplinary teams, the student will develop methods of reading and intervention in the different contexts of health and disease. Applying knowledge and understanding To transmit to the student theoretical models that guide the psychological approach in care settings is a specific aim of the course. From the analysis of the individual conditions to the analysis of the demand, to the ability to reflect on one's work and on one's own positions in the contexts, the students will be guided to the learning of a specific know-how within the medical care settings. The discussion of clinical cases, as well as role playing, will promote a competence in analyzing individual discomfort conditions within the proposed models. The group discussion of specific intervention models will encourage the ability to apply the theoretical concepts to real situations. Making judgements Through the discussion in small groups, the role-playing and the comparison with the teacher on clinical case, the critical skills of the students will be supported. Through the work with the class group, individually or in small groups, the exchange and autonomy of thought and communication will be promoted. Communication skills The exchange, the communication and the sharing of reflections will be supported within the Laboratory in structured spaces for discussion between peers and with the teacher. Learning skills The student will receive at the beginning of the course a calendar in which the topics of the lessons will be described, he can so organize the study. The program will be discussed at the beginning of the course; modify it according to requests and interests of the class group will be possible. Course program
The program develops from general concepts on modern psychosomatics, towards the application of this approach in health care settings, with particular attention to the role of psychology and to the multidisciplinary work in different contexts of health and illness. It provides a first part in which general concepts on the BodyMind relationship are examined, with par-ticular attention to W. Bucci's multiple code theory, to the concept of alexithymia and psycho-biological regulation (about 24 hours); a second part related to the role of relationships in the construction of health; a third part in which the relationship between life events and health is investigated. Within the model of the health psychology, psychological interventions in general medicine and in hospi-tals will also be explored, with specific attention to the different branches of medicine (about 24 hours).

Teaching mode
The didactic model will be a combination of: - lectures, in order to expose the theoretical-practical principles related to the modern conceptualization of the relationship BodyMente, the psycho-biological regulation theory, the relationship between life events and health, the relationship between emotions and health in empirical research, and among (internal and external) relationships and health. - simulations, linked to the use of evaluation tools. - group work, in order to stimulate participation, deepening and critical reflection on the concepts presented. - analysis of clinical cases, in order to apply the knowledge acquired in the discussion of disease conditions. - laboratory experiences, aimed to gain professional skills on the role of psychology in health settings. In particular, students will participate, in small groups, at the following activities: administration of self-report tests and interviews; planning of interventions on health promotion in the health care settings; planning of basic research and re-search-intervention in the care settings.

Exam mode
Aims of the Exam The exam aims to evaluate the students acquisition of theoretical and practical skills. Number of test and timing The exam will be taken at the end of the course. The tests will be two, a written assignment (obligatory) and an oral exam (optional), after about a week from the written exam. Type, duration and method of administration The obligatory test (a written test, with open questions and a clinical case) will aim to verify the knowledge of the theoretical models presented in the course, but also the skills of reflection and discussion of the intervention models within the clinical contexts. The written test will last 60 minutes. The optional test (oral exam) will aim to deepen the topics covered in the written test. Final evaluation The final evaluation will be the result of a global evaluation, relative to the written and oral exam, if carried out. Non-attending students. The students who do not attend classes have to produce a paper for the Laboratory. They could administer an in-terview for the evaluation of alexithymia TSIA (including transcription and scoring) with relative score, or they can agree with the teacher the drafting of another project.
