Dynamic Psychology (Advanced Course)

Course objectives

General aims. Lessons will allow the student to assimilate those psychoanalytic notions that will be essential in clinical psychology. The work achieved in class on specific concepts and on theoretical-clinical models will allow the student to build a connection between different concepts and between theory and clinic. Specific aims Knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student will be able to comprehend the multiple structures of psychoanalytic theories proposed during the lessons. He will also be able to comprehend theoretical evolutions of the different models and to recognize the theoretical and clinical reasons that led to these transformations. The knowledge acquired will help him to understand the contemporary developments of the discipline. Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student will be able to apply the concepts previously learned to unknown areas, such as child psychoanalysis and psychoanalysis of couple. He will also be able to understand in which clinical areas it’s allowed and essential to apply the theories considered. Making judgments At the end of the course the student will be capable of understanding clinical and ethical matters in case of inaccurate and superficial utilisation of the methods used in the psychoanalytic technique. Communication skills At the end of the course, the student will be able to employ a technical language that will allow him to comprehend and to communicate with experts. Learning skills The student will be able to study independently through the use of primary sources of the theories considered during the course. He will also be able to deepen the concepts treated in the textbooks. while studying the books in the program, instead of manuals. Prerequisites It would be beneficial for the student to have at least a handbook knowledge about the main psychoanalytic theories.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
During the course will be explained both diacronically and analitically the main ideas which characterize the freudian, kleinian, winnicottian and bionian models. More specifically some of the concepts that will be treated are those of unconscious, transference, countertransference, schizo-paranoid and depressive position, subjective object, transitional object, primary emotional development, theory of thinking. The explanation of the theoretical concepts will go together with the exposition of clinical experiences which will allow the student to get acquainted with both the theoretical models and their clinical applications. Subjects: 1. Freudian theory: 14 hours 2. Kleinian theory: 6 hours 3. Winnicottian theory: 14 hours 4. Bionian theory: 6 hours 5. Psychoanalytic technique: 8 hours.
Prerequisites
It would be beneficial for the student to have at least a handbook knowledge about the main psychoanalytic theories.

Exam mode
To evaluate the assimilation and comprehension of the texts. To evaluate the critical abilities of the stu-dents. To evaluate their abilities to state theoretical connections between the studied subjects. Only one examination at the end of the course, as stated by the academic agenda. No mid-time examina-tion is expected. Oral exam and open answer. Duration of the exam is variable. Minimum requirement to pass the exam: the candidate is expected to show their knowledge of the main concepts taught during the course; the ability to explain the main features of the theoretical models aim of the exam; the ability to make general connections between theory and clinical case studies. Criterias in order to obtain the maximum grade: the candidate must be able to explain, with mastery of the technical vocabulary, the features of the models aim of the study, showing the interrelations and the modifications such models underwent within the different models; he/she must be able to explain such concepts in a critical way, showing their own originality in presenting connections between different as-pects of the texts; he/she must show some of the possible connections between the theoretical models and the clinical applications.
Lesson mode
The teaching model will be that of classroom-taught lessons. Within the lesson a specific significance is given to the student’s involvement, to unofficially test their comprehension and to foster the appropriate use of the technical language. Furthermore a critical reflection on the presented concepts and models is encouraged, and on the clinical case studies as well.
