Course regulations
NG1 Admission Requirements
To access the master's degree program, students must possess a bachelor's degree or three-year university diploma, or another suitable qualification obtained abroad.
A good knowledge of basic biology, basic ecology and its applications, and basic chemistry, physics, and mathematics is required. In any case, to access the master's degree program, graduates must have earned at least 90 credits (ECTS) in the relevant subject areas of the Biology Degree Program (see NG2).
Students who do not meet these curricular requirements may enroll in individual courses, as outlined in the University Study Plan, and take the relevant exams before enrolling in the master's degree program.
The master's degree program has limited admission and is subject to a selection process. The required qualifications, selection criteria, and number of available places will be indicated in the specific call for applications, which can also be consulted on the University website www.uniroma1.it/studenti.
If the announcement so allows, students who have not yet graduated may also participate in the selection process, provided they complete their degree by the deadline indicated in the announcement for the relevant academic year.
NG2 Entry-level knowledge assessment method
The Degree Program has a limited number of places, which takes into account the availability of laboratory workstations. Selection will be based on a comparative evaluation of the Bachelor's degree curriculum; the criteria and the limited number will be specified in the announcement.
Entry-level knowledge will be automatically assessed for all students who have acquired:
12 credits in Physics and Mathematics (SSD FIS/01-FIS/08 MAT/01-MAT/09)
12 credits in Chemistry (SSD CHIM/01-CHIM/03, CHIM/06)
24 credits in basic biology (SSD BIO/01, BIO/02, BIO/04-BIO/07, BIO/09-BIO/11, BIO/18-BIO/19)
42 credits in core biology and related and integrative disciplines (SSD BIO/01-BIO/14, BIO/18-BIO/19, BIO/16, MED/04, MED/42)
The commission reserves the right to assess the entry-level knowledge of graduates in degree classes other than L-12 (ord. 509/99) and Law 13 (Order 270/04), evaluating any similarities between scientific-disciplinary fields, or the acquisition of credits in additional SSDs provided for by the various areas of the Biology degree, or through supplementary interviews.
NG3 Transfers, Course Shortening, Credit Recognition
NG3.1 Transfers and Transfers
Transfer requests from students from other Sapienza master's or specialist degree programs, and transfer requests from students from other universities, military academies, or other military higher education institutions, are subject to a resolution by the competent bodies, subject to approval by the Degree Programme Board, which:
· assesses the possibility of total or partial recognition of the study career followed up to that point, with the validation of some or all of the exams taken and any credits earned, along with the corresponding grades;
· indicates the year of the program in which the student is enrolled;
· formulates the educational path for obtaining the degree (NG4).
A student may not enroll in a master's degree program belonging to the same class in which he or she already obtained a master's degree.
If the student, based on his or her recognized academic record, qualifies for admission to a course year subsequent to all those activated under the current academic system, he or she may choose between enrolling in the corresponding course year under the previous academic system, if active, or in the most advanced course year currently active under the current academic system (see University Academic Regulations).
Requests for transfer to the master's degree program in EcoBiology must be submitted by the deadlines and according to the procedures specified in the University's curriculum.
NG3.2 Course Abbreviations
Anyone who already holds a four-year, five-year, or specialist degree obtained under a previous system, or a master's degree obtained under a current system, and intends to pursue a further qualification, may apply to enroll in a course year subsequent to the first.
Applications are evaluated by the Degree Programme Board, which:
· assesses the possibility of total or partial recognition of the study career completed up to that point, with the validation of some or all of the exams taken and any credits earned, along with the corresponding grades;
· indicates the course year in which the student is enrolled;
· formulates the educational path for obtaining the qualification.
· defines the educational path for obtaining the qualification.
If a student, based on their recognized academic record, qualifies for admission to a course year subsequent to those activated under the current academic system, they are granted the option to choose between enrolling in the corresponding course year under the previous academic system or in the most advanced course year currently active under the current academic system (see University Academic Regulations).
A student may not enroll in a master's degree program belonging to the same class in which they already obtained their master's degree.
Requests must be submitted by the deadlines and according to the procedures specified in the University's study plan.
NG3.3 Criteria for Credit Recognition
All university credits (CFU) already earned may be recognized if they relate to courses whose content, as documented in the course syllabi, is consistent with one of the educational paths envisaged by the master's degree program.
The Degree Programme may decide on equivalence between Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) for the allocation of credits (ECTS) based on the content of the courses and in accordance with the regulations of the master's degree programme.
Credits already acquired for courses for which, even under different names, there is a clear equivalence in content with the courses offered by the master's degree programme may be recognized as relating to the courses with the names of the master's degree programme in which enrolment is requested. In this case, the Degree Programme will decide on recognition according to the following procedures:
· If the number of credits corresponding to the course for which recognition is requested coincides with that of the course for which it is being recognised, the award will occur directly;
· If the number of credits corresponding to the course for which recognition is requested differs from the number of credits for which it is being recognised, the Degree Programme will examine the student's CV and award the credits, if necessary, after supplementary interviews;
The Degree Programme may recognize as credits professional knowledge and skills certified in accordance with applicable legislation, as well as other knowledge and skills acquired in post-secondary educational activities designed and implemented by the University. These credits count toward the 12 ECTS credits for the student's elective courses or those assigned to optional exams. In any case, the maximum number of credits recognized in these areas cannot exceed 18.
Activities already recognized for the purpose of awarding ECTS credits within the bachelor's degree program cannot be recognized again within the master's degree program.
NG4 Educational Paths
A educational path contains the list of all courses scheduled in the student's career, including the courses related to the 12 elective credits. These can be chosen from among those available throughout Sapienza's entire educational offering.
Each student must obtain official approval of their complete academic program from the Degree Program before taking exams for courses that are not mandatory for all students, under penalty of invalidation of the exam reports.
Students may enroll in a program only once per academic year, starting from the first year of the program.
Any deadlines for submitting the program will be posted on the Degree Program website.
Students can obtain approval of their academic program through two different procedures, both managed online from their INFOSTUD page:
1. by enrolling in one of the programs developed annually by the Degree Program;
2. presentando un percorso formativo individuale, di cui il CdS dovrà valutarne la congruità con gli obiettivi della laurea magistrale in EcoBiologia.
NG4.1 Pre-arranged Courses
The application form for a course offered by the Degree Programme can be completed online from each student's INFOSTUD page. Once the form for the entire chosen course has been completed, it must be submitted electronically using the appropriate button in the Infostud interface for approval by the Degree Programme Evaluation Manager.
If approved, the system will notify the student of the approval of the chosen course and it will immediately become an integral part of their academic record. If not, the student will be notified electronically to modify the list of selected courses.
Application for a pre-arranged course can be made only once per academic year, starting from the first year of the course.
Any deadlines for submitting the pre-arranged course will be indicated on the Degree Programme website.
NG4.2 Individual Study Programs
If a student does not wish to enroll in any of the proposed study programs, they must submit an individual study program using the appropriate form available online from their personal INFOSTUD page.
With the exception of courses related to the 12 elective credits, it will not be possible to include courses not included in the Course Offering (see OF5) in the individual study program.
Students may enroll in an individual study program only once per academic year, starting from the first year of the program.
Any deadlines for submitting an individual study program will be indicated on the Degree Program website.
NG4.3 Modification of Study Programs
A student who has already enrolled in a study program offered by the Degree Program may, in a subsequent academic year, enroll in a different proposed study program or propose an individual study program. Likewise, students who have already been approved for an individual study program may, in a subsequent academic year, opt to enroll in a study program offered by the Degree Program or propose a different individual study program.
In any case, exams already recorded cannot be replaced.
NG5 Teaching Methods
Teaching activities are conventional and distributed on a semester-by-semester basis.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, classroom exercises, and laboratory activities, scheduling activities to allow students adequate time for personal study.
The nominal duration of the master's degree program is four semesters, equal to two years.
NG5.1 University Educational Credits
University educational credits (CFU) measure the amount of work a student undertakes to achieve an educational objective. CFU are acquired by students by passing exams or obtaining qualifications, where applicable.
The credit system adopted by Italian and European universities establishes that one CFU corresponds to 25 hours of student commitment, distributed between institutionally required group learning activities (e.g., lectures, exercises, laboratory work) and individual study.
In the Master's Degree program in EcoBiology, in accordance with Article 23 of the University Teaching Regulations, one CFU corresponds to 8 hours of lectures, or 12 hours of laboratory work or guided exercises, or 20 hours of professional development (with instructor guidance in small groups) or supervised study (independent student work with teaching assistance).
The individual course descriptions for each course, available on the degree program website, show the distribution of CFU and teaching hours across the various activities, along with prerequisites, learning objectives, and outline syllabi.
The total workload for the degree is 120 CFU.
For the Master's Degree in EcoBiology, the portion of the total time commitment reserved for personal study or other individual learning activities is at least 50% of the total time commitment.
NG5.2 Academic Calendar
· Classes will take place from October to January (first semester) and from March to mid-June (second semester).
· Exam sessions are scheduled in February and from June to mid-October.
· Class and exam periods cannot overlap.
NG5.3 Exams
The assessment of individual student performance for each course is expressed through the assignment of a grade out of 30, in which case the minimum passing grade is 18/30, or a passing grade.
The following elements may contribute to the final grade:
· a written exam, generally consisting of multiple written tests to be taken during and at the end of the course;
· an oral exam;
· independent work completed by the student.
NG6 Attendance, Prerequisites, and Advancement to Subsequent Years
There are no prerequisites for exams.
NG7 Part-time Program
The deadlines and procedures for requesting part-time program, as well as the related regulations, are set forth in Article 24 of the current University Manifesto and are available on the Sapienza website. The Ecobiology master's degree program has set a standard annual credit requirement for students applying for part-time study equal to or greater than 40 credits.
Please note that some courses, during the years agreed upon for part-time study, may be cancelled or modified depending on the exam syllabus. In these cases, the Degree Program will inform the student of the new course of study.
NG8 Students who are not on track and validity of earned credits
Pursuant to Article 32 of the current University Study Plan, a full-time student is considered not on track if he or she has not passed all exams and has not acquired the number of credits required to graduate within two years. In these cases, the deadlines for graduation are regulated by Article 33 of the current University Study Plan.
NG9 Tutoring
Students in the master's degree program in EcoBiology may benefit from tutoring provided by the instructors listed in OF7. Any additional instructors available as tutors and the tutoring options will be advertised each academic year by posting notices at the Academic Secretariat and on the master's degree program website.
NG10 Excellence Programs
The degree program offers a University Excellence Program for deserving students. This program offers additional learning activities beyond those of the program in which the student is enrolled. These activities include in-depth disciplinary and interdisciplinary study, seminars, and internships, according to a program that is personalized and agreed upon with each individual student. Students who have gained access to the Excellence Program are assigned to a professor or tutor who oversees their program and collaborates in organizing the activities, as agreed upon with the student.
The deadlines and procedures for applying for the Excellence Program are listed on the degree program website, where you can also view the call for applications and download a sample application form. Verification of requirements is carried out by a commission specifically appointed by the Degree Program Council.
Upon graduation, students who have completed an Excellence Program within the deadlines indicated in the call for applications will receive a certificate of completion, issued by the Dean of the Faculty, in the same manner as other types of certification, which must be recorded in the student's academic record. Along with this certificate, the University will award the student a prize equal to the amount of tuition paid in the final year of the program.
NG11 Final Exam
To be admitted to the final exam, students must have earned all the credits required by the academic regulations for activities other than the final exam and must have completed the administrative formalities set forth in the University Academic Regulations.
The final exam consists of the presentation and discussion of an experimental thesis on topics relevant to the objectives of the program. The student must develop an original thesis under the guidance of a supervisor. The thesis must consist of an original, well-argued study, conducted using rigorous scientific methods and with the lowest possible cost-benefit ratio (e.g., using time-saving methods and low execution costs). The thesis must also demonstrate the candidate's ability to synthesize and autonomy. The final exam is worth 39 credits. The supervisor may be supported by a co-supervisor. Students intending to conduct a thesis in research laboratories of other faculties or outside the university must submit to the Degree Programme Chair a declaration from the researcher stating that they are available to assist the student in carrying out the experimental work and in preparing the thesis. The declaration must be drafted using a specific form and accompanied by the required documentation. If the Degree Programme Chair believes that the information provided guarantees a satisfactory quality of the work on ecobiological topics, he or she will sign the approval form. The Chair will also designate a Degree Programme professor from the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences who will support the external supervisor throughout the experimental work and the preparation of the thesis. The external supervisor will be responsible for the thesis, along with the external supervisor.
The final grade is based on an evaluation of the student's academic record, the quality of the thesis, and its presentation, as well as on additional factors designed to encourage completion of exams within the deadlines established by the academic regulations. The Degree Committee, composed of seven faculty members from the Degree Program, expresses the grade out of 110 and may, by unanimous vote, award the candidate the highest grade with honors.
If the Degree Program deems it appropriate, the written thesis may be written in English. In this case, the title must still be in Italian.
NG12 Application of Article 6 of the Student Regulations (Royal Decree 4.6.1938, No. 1269)
Students enrolled in the Master's Degree Program in EcoBiology, in order to enhance their academic record, may, as provided for in Article 6 of the Royal Decree, No. 1239 of 4/6/1938, students may take no more than two courses from other Sapienza degree programs of the same level and under the same academic program each academic year. These exams do not count toward the credits required for the degree and are not included in the average; they are merely added to the student's academic record.
Students may not take exams from other faculties scheduled for years subsequent to the one in which they are enrolled, under penalty of cancellation.
The Degree Program will express an opinion upon request by the Student Affairs Office. Given the scientific and cultural significance of this provision, such a request may only be made by students who have earned at least 18 credits in the Master's Degree in EcoBiology.
Students wishing to take advantage of the opportunity provided for in this article must submit a written request to the Student Affairs Office, according to the procedures set forth in Article 29 of the University Study Plan.
