Course objectives

The objective of the course is to contribute to the education of the future professionals who will be able to interact in international contexts and to use written and spoken English, along with specialized lexicon and specific pragmatic competence as effective work tools, both in reception and in production.

Course program
The course involves the study of academic sectorial English, ESP-English for Special Purposes, at the upper-intermediate level, i.e. level B2, thus combining the study of upper-intermediate grammar with that of sectorial vocabulary. This is a highly specialized program created exclusively for this degree course. Grammatical study topics will be the following: - Future perfect simple and continuous, - Phrases with "be" to express the future, - Express certainty and probability, - Conditionals, - Linking words, - Phrasal verbs (get, give, go, look, put, run, take, turn), - Used to v. Would, to be used to / to get used to, - Reported speech, - Passive voice, - restrictive and non-restrictive relative subordiante clauses. Environment, urban ecosystem and pollution The course involves the development in the student of the 4 language skills: speaking, writing, reading, listening. PLEASE NOTE THAT: since this course is entitled "Laboratory", there will be a greater practical component and in class the active participation of students is expected in doing grammatical exercises, reading comprehension activities and writing professional articles with the aim of improving the student's expressive fluency and confidence in interpersonal communication. Therefore, students in class will have to do the exercises requested by the teacher and present in the book indicated in the bibliography and in the handouts placed in the moodle.

Handouts (see the moodle page) Students who have strong gaps in the English language, in addition to studying the handouts (which are at level B2), it is recommended to review the English language of the previous levels (A1, A2 and B1) using a good level English language manual, such as, for example, E. Jordan - P. Fiocchi, "New Grammar Files. English Grammar and Vocabulary. Elementary (A2) to Upper-Intermediate (B2)", Trinity Whitebridge editions. Or similar books.
Exam mode
Method: mixed exam (written + oral) To access the oral exam you must first have passed the written exam. The written exam is in the form of a computerized test to be carried out via the university PC. The exam is at level B2 and includes grammar exercises, specialist vocabulary and the writing of a specialist article following the instructions provided by the exam test. In the written exam you can only use the monolingual English vocabulary which is included on the exam website www.exam.net. The written exam has a maximum duration of n. 2 hours (if the student finishes early they can hand in and leave early). The oral exam concerns the oral presentation of two of the topics covered in class (and included in the handouts). The student's presentation must last 10 minutes. The teacher, if she deems it appropriate, may ask questions at her discretion. Type of grade upon passing the exam (written + oral): ELIGIBILITY CFU: 3 Instructions for taking the exam To take the exam you need to register for the exam session on INFOSTUD. In accordance with the University Regulations, on the day of the exam you must accredit your presence by showing your identity document (Italian identity card, or driving license, or passport - NO photocopied) and you must sign your presence. Students with DSA, in addition to registering for the exam session on Infostud, must also inform the Sapienza DSA office (e-mail: ufficio.dsa@uniroma1.it) of the exam date for which they have registered, in order to have a personalized exam. Disabled students, in addition to registering for the exam on Infostud, must also inform the Sapienza disability office (email: ufficio.disabilita@uniroma1.it) in order to have a personalized exam.
