Study, Research, and Internship Opportunities Abroad
Sapienza offers a wide range of opportunities for studying, conducting research, and completing internships abroad — both within and outside Europe, for short or extended periods, thesis research abroad, and much more.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions and funds study mobility (SMS) in all disciplines and levels of study, including PhD programs. It also supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
Through Erasmus+, students can attend courses and take exams that are fully recognized in their academic record, or conduct research for their master’s or doctoral thesis abroad.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
The Erasmus+ traineeship program allows students to complete internships at companies, training centers, or research institutions located in participating countries.
These full-time internships abroad are recognized as an integral part of the student’s degree program. Internships can also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection process takes place before the degree is awarded.
The total mobility period can include both study and traineeship experiences, up to the program’s maximum duration.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Program
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own resources, each year students can spend a study or thesis research period at one of over 200 non-EU partner institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements.
The Overseas Program provides a monthly grant of €700 (net) for the first five months and €500 (net) from the sixth month onward.
Stays abroad must last at least 90 consecutive days and may not exceed two consecutive semesters.
Each student may receive this grant only once per degree cycle, and it cannot be combined with other Sapienza funding.

Study or Research in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
Funded by the European Commission, the Erasmus+ ICM program allows students and faculty to spend a period abroad for study, thesis research, teaching, or training in non-EU countries.
Participants receive a scholarship and travel reimbursement, and all activities completed abroad are recognized by Sapienza upon return, as established in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility lasts from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 6 months (which may be extended up to 12 months, with the last 6 months under the “Zero-EU Grant” option).
The grant also covers PhD research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the official Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and host universities.
