International experiences
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad, both within and outside Europe, for short or long periods, thesis research abroad, and much more.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions; it funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and at all levels of study (including doctoral studies), and facilitates the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. The Erasmus+ program allows students to attend courses and take exams, with full recognition in their academic career, or to carry out research for the preparation of their master’s or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to undertake internships in companies, training centers, and research institutions based in participating countries. The program makes it possible to carry out full-time internships abroad, recognized as an integral part of the study program. The internship may also take place after graduation, provided that the selection process is completed before the degree is awarded. The mobility period for traineeships is added to study mobility, within the maximum number of months established by the program.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Program
Thanks to funding provided by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own resources, every year students are offered the opportunity to spend a study period abroad – to take exams or conduct thesis research – at one of more than 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements. The Overseas mobility program provides a monthly contribution of €700 net for the first 5 months and €500 net from the 6th month onwards. The stay abroad must be continuous, with a minimum duration of 90 days and a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The contribution may be used only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Study or Research Periods in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
Funded by the European Commission, the Erasmus+ ICM program allows students and faculty to spend a study/research period (for thesis work) or a teaching/training period in non-EU countries. The program includes a scholarship and coverage of travel costs. All activities carried out abroad are formally recognized upon return to Sapienza, as established in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility can last from 3 to 6 months (with a possible extension up to 12 months, of which the last 6 months without a scholarship under the “Zero-EU Grant” scheme). ICM grants also support PhD-level research mobility of the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated through the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the city of the home university and that of the host institution.
