For the 1st semester 2025/26, for the course “PHYSICAL METALLURGY OF INNOVATIVE NANO-STRUCTURED MATERIALS (10610455),” taught exclusively in English, classes will be held every Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Paolo Ercoli classroom (Computing Center, building RM031) and every Friday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the classroom 46 (Building RM031).

Current and Previous Positions
Cristian Vendittozzi is Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Chemical, Materials and Environmental Engineering, DICMA, since 1 March 2024. His research covers metallurgy, advanced materials, smart structures, FBG-based sensing systems, metallic coatings, additive manufacturing, and materials for aerospace and harsh-environment applications.
From April 2015 to March 2024, he was Associate Professor at the University of Brasília, UnB, Brazil, in the Automotive Engineering and Aerospace Engineering degree programmes. From 2013 to 2015, he held research fellow and postdoctoral positions at Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, working on smart materials, FBG-based systems for aerospace structures, and SOFC-related materials.
Between 2008 and 2012, he was a member of the Sapienza LARES team, contributing to the design, manufacturing, qualification, and launch preparation of the LARES satellite and its mechanical ground support equipment.
He holds a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a PhD in Materials and Raw Materials Engineering.
Visiting Academic Positions
From March 2019 to March 2020, he was Invited Scientist at CIRA, the Italian Aerospace Research Centre in Capua, Italy, where he worked on morphing concepts and adaptive structures for aerospace applications.
Teaching Activities and PhD Supervision
At Sapienza University of Rome, he teaches Metallurgy of Nanostructured Materials and Metallurgical Processes and Plants, both delivered in Italian, and Physical Metallurgy of Innovative Nanostructured Materials, delivered in English.
Within the PhD Programme in Electrical Engineering, Materials and Nanotechnology, he supervises the doctoral research of Emilia Di Micco, XL cycle, 2025 intake, focused on nanostructured metallic coatings for fibre-optic sensors intended for harsh environments involving extreme temperatures and strong magnetic fields.
At the University of Brasília, he taught courses in Aerospace Engineering and Automotive Engineering, including Advanced Technologies and Materials, Industrial Technical Drawing – CAD, and Aerospace Systems, with a minimum teaching load of 150 hours per semester.
National and International Collaborations and Networks
His collaborations connect Italian and Brazilian institutions as well as international research networks in aerospace engineering, detector technologies, structural health monitoring, and advanced materials. He has collaborated with or within Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Brasília, CIRA, the Brazilian Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency through the LARES mission, INFN/CERN-related detector research activities, ENEA, INSTM, IGF, and the Italian Physical Society.
His collaborative track record includes FBG-based monitoring for aerospace, civil, and mechanical structures; RPC/GEM detector instrumentation and environmental monitoring; CubeSat and orbital-debris studies; adaptive and morphing structures; and materials research on coatings, shape-memory alloys, additive manufacturing, and high-temperature polymers.
These networks support interdisciplinary research activities involving materials selection, coating processes, sensor integration, aerospace constraints, and experimental validation.
Other Work Experience
Beyond his academic appointments, Cristian Vendittozzi has contributed to applied aerospace and materials-engineering activities related to the LARES laser-ranged satellite, CubeSat studies, deployable and morphing systems, FBG-based monitoring architectures, and the development of polymeric and composite structures for aerospace applications.
He has also provided consultancy and technical support to private companies in the development of structural health monitoring systems for different engineering sectors. These activities include monitoring solutions for civil engineering infrastructures, such as viaducts, bridges, building foundations, and railway infrastructure; structures belonging to the historical and cultural heritage; and aeronautical and nautical structures, including racing sailing boats.
His broader technical experience includes satellite body and subsystem design, mechanical ground support equipment, structural monitoring of pipelines, railway components and landing gear, and the adaptation of low-cost additive manufacturing systems for high-performance thermoplastics such as PEEK. He has also contributed to research involving gas-based detectors and fibre-optic monitoring in chemically demanding environments.
Administrative Roles and Position Responsibilities
Since joining Sapienza University of Rome in 2024 as Associate Professor at DICMA, he has contributed to the institutional activities of the Department through regular participation in Department Board meetings. He is also a member of the Departmental Committee for PRIN project reporting, contributing to the administrative and financial monitoring of nationally funded research projects.
In addition, he serves as a member of the Quality Assurance Management Committee of the Degree Programme in Nanotechnology Engineering, contributing to the monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement of teaching quality, course organisation, and programme-level quality assurance procedures.
This current institutional activity complements his previous administrative and academic responsibilities at the University of Brasília, where he served as member of degree-programme boards in Aerospace Engineering and Automotive Engineering, member of the Structuring Teaching Committee for Aerospace Engineering, internship coordinator for Automotive Engineering, representative of the Automotive Engineering programme in faculty bodies, and member of university committees related to undergraduate studies and project agreements.
Scientific Organisations and Coordination of Academic Activities
At Sapienza University of Rome, he is Principal Investigator of CREATION — CRyogenic Efficiency gAins Through optImized nanO-structured metal coatiNgs — a project focused on nanostructured metallic coatings for FBG sensors operating in cryogenic environments.
In Brazil, he coordinated the Space Education and Internationalisation Project, PEEI, funded by the Brazilian Space Agency; the FAPDF project on the fabrication and characterisation of PEEK by additive manufacturing for aerospace applications; and served as Brazilian Principal Investigator of SPLASH — Self-DePloyable FLexible AeroSHell for de-Orbiting and Space Re-entry — an Italy–Brazil cooperation project with CIRA.
He also conceived and coordinated SETT, the Space Environment Think Tank, and co-founded the Association of Italian Researchers in Brazil, ARIB.
Editorial Activity
He is a member of the Editorial Board of Fracture and Structural Integrity and the Virginia Journal of Business, Technology and Science. He has served as peer reviewer for Sensors, IEEE Access, IEEE Sensors Journal, Fracture and Structural Integrity, Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, Information, European Journal of Physics, and Polymers.

Prizes and Awards
In February 2012, he received the LARES Team Award from the Italian Space Agency, ASI, for outstanding contributions to the success of the LARES mission as a member of the LARES team, with specific involvement in the satellite body, onboard subsystems, and mechanical ground support equipment.
