Course program
The course aims to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to assist people with mental health problems of a socio-medical nature in care situations encountered in hospitals and outside hospitals.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Understand the Department of Mental Health (DSM), its structure, and the organization of the
services that comprise it.
• Understand reception in different care contexts and empathy as a fundamental concept in
psychiatric practice.
• Use effective communication: the helping relationship, active listening.
• Recognize the needs of the person being cared for and use specific professional skills and abilities aimed at identifying situations of distress in order to activate appropriate therapeutic and preventive interventions.
• Establish and maintain a helping relationship with the person being cared for, their family members, and their support network.
• Work in a multidisciplinary team: team characteristics, the power of decisions in difficult cases,
the alliance with the patient and with the reference service.
• Work effectively in places where care and rehabilitation programs are implemented: theoretical discussion and
comparison within the reference team.
• Use professional knowledge to provide safe, evidence-based care (EBN) to assist people with psychiatric disorders or problems.
• Develop nursing skills aimed at identifying the main care issues encountered in patients with mental illness.
• Develop nursing skills aimed at identifying the main care problems encountered in patients with mental illness. Stigma and response to treatment.
• Identify the skills and responsibilities of nurses in implementing a care and network project for the integration of users into different care contexts: DSM services, private clinics, their own homes, etc.
• Define the main effects of mental illness on the family and life of patients.
