DESIGN OF CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS

Course objectives

This course is one of the subjects of the discipline of Technical Architecture to be chosen within the optional extras. The aim is to provide an in-depth examination of the issues related to the aspects of a correct executive design of the architectural organism, considered not as a simple "engineering" of compositional choices already made; the executive design is therefore seen not as a mere assembly of elements taken from repertoires of production or manuals, but the result of a logical and congruent continuation of a specific creative process to be deepened in its various complex aspects, both formal and technological, of constructability of the building organism as a whole and in all its parts, down to detail. The teaching, due to its location in the 5th year of the degree course, is mainly addressed to students who wish to carry out their thesis in this subject or in related subjects. In addition to a basic preparation in subjects in the area of technical architecture and architectural composition, it is useful that the student has a good preparation in building technique and solid notions of technical physics, mechanical systems and materials technology.

Course program
During the course, the themes of technical architecture are retraced by analyzing some of the most significant building elements in the formal and constructive organization of the architectural organism and focusing attention on the construction process of the physical elements that contribute to shape the space and their methods of realization. All in the awareness of the close link with the production sector of the building industry, in which every activity, for centuries controlled through the "rule of art", today must be commensurate in terms of performance procedures for quality systems in the design, management and production of the building. In particular, they are examined: - the horizontal closing systems, with particular attention to the roofs, also of great span, which with their configuration contribute strongly to the definition of the formal aspect of the architectural organism; the roofs are analyzed from a constructive point of view, both in the load-bearing function and in the completion package, as a system which, being an external/internal border element, must guarantee adequate performance in terms of environmental comfort. - vertical closing systems that contribute to the external configuration of the architectural organism by analyzing them in their formal and constructive evolution also in relation to production transformations. The opaque and transparent closures are then analyzed, examining their construction packages and the way they correlate with the elements around them. - The vertical connection systems described in their evolution, from those for self-locomotion to mechanized ones, and in their influence on the building organism also at a formal as well as functional level. Finally, starting from the insertion in the context up to the resolution of construction details, some buildings, taken from the most qualified contemporary production, are analyzed in order to retrace in the complexity of an architectural work the topics covered in the course and at the same time the patient and wise work of the designer.
Prerequisites
The student must have taken Building construction 2 with design lab and Architectural Composition III with design lab.
