MANAGEMENT OF QUALITY

Course objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of Quality in process management for organizations, through the definition and historical evolution of the concept (from Quality Control to Total Quality Management), the regulatory framework, methodologies for analysis and improvement. In particular, the course presents an applicative focus on process mapping and management methodologies and on the Lean Six Sigma methodology for continuous improvement. In addition, the main elements of the Quality Management Systems (UNI EN ISO 9001) are presented and addressed.

Quality: introductory concepts The definition of the concept of quality and its related dimensions that contribute to customer satisfaction. The significant steps in the evolution of quality management models, from the artisan approach to product quality control, quality assurance, quality management and total quality management. Process Management Definition of process, functional approach and process approach, tools for coordination. Process classification and process mapping: analysis methodologies and representation types. Monitoring and improvement: measurement system, indicators and objectives; examples and applications. Quality Management: the regulatory framework The Italian and international regulatory framework of reference. Certification of management systems, products and personnel. Accreditation of certification bodies. The standards of the ISO 9000 series: aims, evolution and contents of the series as a whole and of the main standards and guides. ISO 9001:2008 "Quality Management Systems - Requirements". The Lean Six Sigma methodology Lean Six Sigma methodology and continuous improvement process, DMAIC approach and quality tools. The approach to continuous improvement and waste reduction through Lean Manufacturing. The statistical significance of Six Sigma. The improvement project: the project charter, the planning and definition of the team. The DMAIC Methodology: (i) DEFINE: determine the scope and boundaries of the process being improved and the outbound needs; (ii) MEASURE: determine the current performance of the object of the study against the identified needs: (iii) ANALYZE: to understand the causes of variability of the measured behavior, identifying the reasons for deviations from the predetermined needs; (iv) IMPROVE: to find solutions to the identified problems and to carry out a pilot project of the to determine their feasibility; CONTROL: to implement the selected solution and to try to spread its benefits on other areas, products and processes of the organization.

Exam mode
The aim of the examination is to verify the level of achievement of the learning objectives indicated above. The exam consists in the presentation of a Lean Six Sigma project, reviewed by the teacher during the lecture period, as a group elaboration up to the Analyze phase of the methodology and in an individual discussion of the Improve phase. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, having correctly applied them during the development of the project and presenting mastery of the methods and techniques for solving the main criticalities that emerged.
