The course offers a systematic introduction to the main tools and methods of film analysis, aiming to provide students with a solid theoretical and critical foundation for the study of cinematic language. The methodological framework combines formalist and narratological approaches with elements of semiotics, enunciation theory, and stylistic analysis, focusing both on the internal structure of the film text and its relationship to historical, cultural, and production contexts. The theoretical premises draw on the major contributions of film theory (Bazin, Eisenstein, Metz, Bertetto, Bordwell, Elsaesser), within a comparative perspective between classical models and contemporary approaches. The learning objectives include the ability to recognize and interpret the formal and narrative components of film, to apply the main analytical tools with methodological awareness, and to develop an autonomous critical competence in the interpretation of cinematic and audiovisual works.

The student’s learning will be assessed through an oral examination designed to verify the knowledge of the course contents, the ability to analyze and interpret film texts, and the mastery of appropriate disciplinary language. During the exam, the student will be expected to demonstrate an informed use of the methodological tools acquired, the ability to establish connections among different topics, and the capacity to develop autonomous critical reflections.

Classes will be held in person and will combine theoretical framing with applied analytical activities. After an introductory section devoted to the main theoretical and methodological models of film analysis, the course will include the collective discussion and close analysis of film sequences from different periods and genres. Screenings and in-class exercises are designed to enhance students’ critical observation and interpretation skills, promoting the direct application of the conceptual tools presented by the instructor. Readings and discussions of theoretical texts will complement the lectures.
