Art and politics: a modern and contemporary perspective. The course aims at analyzing the relations existing between art and politics, in order to show how far aesthetic experience has been one of the fundamental processes of building a common sense and a sense of belonging to collectivity in the modern age. Likewise, art, in particular images but also storytelling, has played a crucial role in orienting the public opinion. As far as these issues are concerned, we will consider the philosophical hypotheses of some modern and contemporary thinkers: Friedrich Schiller and Walter Benjamin, but also Giorgio Agamben, Umberto Eco, Vilém Flusser, Louis Marin and Bernard Stiegler. Different theoretical perspectives and interpretive models (aesthetic, semiotic, hermeneutical, phenomenological) of reading images as political devices will be so considered. This investigation upon the political uses of images will be framed within the emergence of new forms of production and fruition of the digital images in the age of AI.

The evaluation consists of an oral examination. The following will be assessed (also during the course): 1. knowledge and understanding of the texts covered by the course, from their most general aspects to their details; in particular, the students' ability to confront a philosophical text and to critically analyse specific aspects of it will be assessed (evaluation points 1-15). 2. The students' ability to express themselves and to master the vocabulary (evaluation points 1-10). 3. Knowledge of the historical context (in relation to the thought of the authors covered by the course and in relation to the history of philosophy in general) (evaluation points 1-5).
