ARABIC DIALECTOLOGY

Course objectives

The three-year degree in Arabic language and translation includes a course in Arabic Dialectology on third year. This course aims at introducing students to the encounter with the actual Arabic dialects spoken in the Arab world, besides Standard Arabic. The Arabic Dialectology course provides students with a first introduction to the discipline, followed by a focus on the Middle-Eastern variant, for which students are expected to reach level B1.

1. Introduction to the discipline 2. Sociolinguistics of the contemporary Arabic-speaking world (register variation and social variation) 3. History of the Arabic language, formation and diffusion of modern dialects 4. Dialect areas: major distinguishing traits (elements of phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon) 5. Practical introduction to Levantine Arabic
Prerequisites
Havin passed Arabic II
Books
O. Durand, Dialettologia araba, Carocci, Roma, 2009. Other relevant materials will be provided by the professor during the course.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
Oral examination with lecturer and language-expert teacher. Exposition of theoretical concepts. Conversation in Arabic with language-expert teacher.
