Communication and Politics

Course objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Course program
The specific context of political communication. Historical and thematic definition of political communication as an interdisciplinary research field, connected to the sociology of communication, the philosophy of language, public law, political science, and marketing. Actors of political communication: information and communication system, political system and institutions, citizenship system. Processes of the mediatization of politics and the role of the mass media: the media logic. Models of interaction between mass media and politics. Models of interaction between social media and politics. Languages of politics. Rituals and symbols of politics as communicative and persuasive elements. The political actors of political communication: presidents and leaders, governments, parties and collective movements. parliaments. Electoral campaigns and political marketing: factors in the socialization of citizens to the political offer through the mass media and social media system. Actors of political information: political journalism as a peculiar and specialized segment of the journalistic world. The civic actors of political communication: citizenship, public opinion and the communication environment. The topics of reception and participation in political communication in top-down and bottom-up modes. Digital media, social media and democracy: how online politics has changed the structures of political communication.
Prerequisites
Good command of the functions of the communication process. Specific interest related to journalism. Good knowledge of the functioning of the institutional and political system. Interest in the communicative dimension of politics.
