Course objectives

The course in Arabic Dialectology for the Master degree aims at strengthening students’ knowledge of the panorama of Arabic dialects, introducing them to the encounter with the Tunisian variant, for which students are expected to reach level B1.

Course program
1. Introduction to the course and discipline 2. Introduction to Arabic dialectology and sociolinguistics 3. Dialect areas: major distinguishing features (elements of phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary) 4. Linguistic features of Tunis Arabic from a comparative perspective in order to situate this dialect in the vast panorama of Arabic dialects 5. Insight into styles, registers, mixed forms and linguistic hierarchies in Tunisia 6. Practical introduction to Tunisian Arabic
Prerequisites
Arabic dialectology (Bachelor)
Books
O. Durand, Dialettologia araba, Carocci, Roma, 2009. Other relevant materials will be provided by the professor during the course.
Frequency
Attendance at the course is not mandatory but is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
Oral examination with lecturer and language-expert teacher. Exposition of theoretical concepts. Conversation in Arabic with language-expert teacher.
