Course objectives

The purpose of this class is to increase both philological and linguistic competence dwelling on the contentious issues of the relationships between text and musical performance in the romance poetry of the Middle Ages, with particular attention to versification and metrical forms.

Course program
The course aims to introduce students to the study of medieval theatre in the Romance area (12th–15th centuries), with a focus on the genres, languages, music and cultural contexts in which the texts were composed and performed. Particular emphasis will be placed on philological issues related to the transmission of texts, their critical edition and their performative dimension. Contents Introduction: definitions and issues of medieval theatre; orality, writing, and performance. Religious theatre: liturgical dramas, sacred representations, Passion plays, and Mysteries. Secular theatre: dramatic plays, French farces, allegorical representations, and moralities. Languages and traditions: from Latin to the Romance vernaculars (French, Occitan, Catalan, Italian). Transmission of texts: manuscripts, indirect tradition, problems of critical editions. Analysis of exemplary texts: Le Jeu d’Adam (French) Il Mistero di Sant'Agnese (Occitan) Italian sacred plays The relationship with music: liturgical chant, lyric insertions, and scenic accompaniment. Comparative perspectives: common models and local specificities within the Romance traditions.

Frequency
Lessons normally take place in person. Occasionally, distance learning may be proposed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. transport strikes, temporary unavailability of classrooms, teacher illness, etc.). Attendance is not compulsory but is strongly encouraged.

Written exam with open questions on the course's program.
