XIX AND XX CENTURY ART HISTORY

Course objectives

General aim: the students will deepen their knowledge of aspects of the history of art, with a particular regard to the relationship with the general development of the artistic trends of the second half of the 20th century. Specific aims: students will be directed to (a) identify styles and movements of the works under consideration; (b) acquire full command of the specific vocabulary and methodologies of the discipline to develop their skills of expression and autonomous judgment; (c) develop the ability to articulate links between the different readings and the knowledge acquired around a given subject; (d) link the knowledge acquired in the history of contemporary art with other fields of study (literature, performing arts, philosophical theories). Through lectures, workshops, and educational visits, the students will be encouraged to apply the knowledge they have gained to the new contexts, to develop their ability to analyze and compare the information.

The course explores the following topics: - The origins of performance in the avant-garde: performance practices in Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism. - The birth of the Happening - Performance in Neo-Dadaism, Nouveau Réalisme and Pop Art. -Performance in Arte Povera - Body Art in Europe and North America - The relationships between Performance art, Relational art, and Public Art.

No prerequisites required
Books
Students have to study: RoseLee Goldberg, Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present, Thames & Hudson, 2001 (or other editions). Students should also study the slides uploaded to Moodle Sapienza at the course page.

Exam mode
Final oral examination. The mastery of the content and skills acquired, linguistic accuracy and lexical property, and the argumentative ability demonstrated by the candidate will be taken into account in the evaluation of the examination.
