PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL RESEARCH

Course objectives

The course aims to offer the student the means to construct research designs and the suitable technique to answer to the cognitive demand the researcher poses. Students will learn: a) how to collect data --- individual and aggregate; b) to choose the proper techniques to analyse it; c) to illustrate the data as well as to utilise and assess data research. Indeed, not only is this knowledge useful for students and future researchers, but also for those who intend to commission research, as they need to be able to judge the competence of the agencies that will carry it out, as well as the reliability of the data collected by other researchers. d) The student must learn to deepen knowledge independently.

Exam mode
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS Written test with 3 open questions. The exam test has the function of evaluating: 1. level of learning of the concepts and reference theories; 2. ability to orient oneself with respect to possible research designs in relation to the stipulated objectives; 3. critical and connection skills between the texts studied. ATTENDING STUDENTS Written test with 3 open questions, on a small portion of the texts + evaluation of the final paper relating to the laboratory activity carried out during the course. The overall grade will be calculated as a weighted average of the written test (2/3 of the score) and the final paper (1/3 of the score)
Lesson mode
Various teaching aids, such as slides, will be used during the lessons. Exercises are planned. Students' active participation in the lessons is encouraged to the maximum, with exercises aimed at stimulating their ability to apply the topics covered in the lessons. Students are encouraged to contact the teacher during office hours to get explanations, exchange ideas, etc. This is considered an essential part of the same course of lessons. Specifically, for attending students, a laboratory part is planned that revolves around applying the concepts and techniques studied in the classroom to an empirical case study. Therefore, a third of the lessons will be dedicated to carrying out empirical research and collecting and analyzing data.
