Course objectives

The aim of the course are: 1. to make students capable to communicate in Spanish in different situations within the humanities, social sciences of the information society and communication studies; 2. to make students familiar with Hispanic culture (both Spanish and Hispanic American culture) to promote awareness and interest, to fully immerse students in the Spanish; 3. to make students master of the basics of Spanish phonetics to speak properly, with right pronunciation, intonation and rhythm. In this way they could eventually work in cinema, theatre, radio and television; 4. to make students familiar with Spanish spelling and improve their writing skills in order to be able to work in the press, publishing and digital media industries.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course aims to help students achieve a B1 level of Spanish, with particular attention to media language and digital communication. Main contents: - A2–B1 level grammatical structures. Pronunciation and spelling; accentuation rules; definite and indefinite articles; gender and number of nouns and adjectives; subject personal pronouns; the present indicative (regular and irregular forms); demonstratives; hay/estar, ser/estar; prepositions, connectors, and quantifiers; possessives; the gerund, comparatives; adverbs of frequency and time markers; direct and indirect pronouns; the present perfect indicative (regular and irregular participles); the preterite (regular and irregular); the imperfect indicative; contrast between past tenses; the future and the conditional. - Vocabulary and communicative functions. - Reading and comprehension of authentic texts on cultural, social, and communication-related topics.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required.
Frequency
Attendance is highly recommended, in order to reach a B1 level of the language.
Exam mode
Written exam (50%) conducted with the language assistant. Oral exam (50%): discussion of texts provided by professor.
Lesson mode
The first part of the course will focus primarily on acquiring grammar, vocabulary, and communicative functions corresponding to the initial language level (A1–A2) up to B1, which is the objective of the course. The grammar lectures will alternate with classroom exercises and with reading and comprehension activities. The second part of the course (the oral exam component) will focus on reading texts related to the field of study, as well as other texts aimed at providing basic knowledge of key topics in Spanish language and culture. The material required for the oral part of the exam will be provided by professor.

Course program
The course aims to help students reach B1 level in Spanish and gain a critical awareness of contemporary Hispanic culture, with a particular focus on the languages of media and digital communication. Main topics: 1. Grammar structures and communicative functions (A2–B1 level). 2. Spanish phonetics and pronunciation 3. Vocabulary and communicative uses. 4. Reading and comprehension of authentic texts on cultural, social, and communicative topics. 5. Introduction to Hispanic and Latin American culture (society, media, traditions).
Prerequisites
There are no compulsory prerequisites, but attendance is advised to strengthen linguistic competence.

Frequency
Attendance is strongly recommended. In-class activities facilitate achievement of the B1 level and preparation for the final exams.
Exam mode
The written exam (50%) will be completed with the support of the Spanish language assistant. Oral exam (50%) - Conversation in Spanish; - Reading and discussion of texts provided by the instructor. The assessment methods are consistent with the intended learning outcomes and aim to verify overall linguistic competence and knowledge of Hispanic culture.
Lesson mode
First Part: Focuses on acquiring grammar, vocabulary, and communicative functions from A1-A2 level up to B1. Lessons alternate between grammar instruction and in-class exercises using the textbook, aimed at expanding vocabulary and practical language use. Second Part (Oral Exam): Centers on reading texts related to students' field of study and key topics in Spanish and Latin American language and culture. All materials for the oral exam will be provided by the instructor.
