The course will analyze the main phases of European history in a long purée approach and particular the evolution of State structure and institutions and of the most important cultural concepts that influenced the contemporary definition of the so called "human rights". A special focus will be devoted to the relationships between Empire and people, both in Europe and in the colonial world, for example to minorities, refugees, and indigenous people.

STORIA INTERNAZIONALE DEI NAZIONALISMI E IDENTITA' 10596329 2023/2024

The course aims to analyze the development of modern national identities, the idea of nation, the creation of Nation-States and the spread of nationalism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It will define the principal aspects of this historical process, not only the cultural ones, but also the social, economic, political implications in a multidisciplinary perspective. Special attention will be devoted in particular to the transnational and international dimension and to the humanitarian aspects such as the development of international law and institutions, of the systems of minority and refugees protection, furthermore to the evolution of the human rights regime in contemporary age.

STATES AND MINORITIES IN THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION 10589840 2023/2024

The course will analyze the relationships between the States and the different ethnic groups - hence, between majorities and minorities, dominant and dominated groups - and their implications the international dimension. A special attention will be devoted to the system created after the first world war and during the contemporary age. Further issues that will be analyzed are: the protection of minorities and refugees, the regime of human rights, the development and international law and institutions.

The exam will be carried out through verbal examination and could include the discussion of the research or written work of the student. The evaluation will take in consideration both language fluency and abilities of summarizing and analyzing events in their complexity.
