Educational objectives Students will acquire knowledge on the basic techniques of molecular biotechnology and recombinant DNA. Educational objectives The aim of the course is to provide students with an updated and current view of natural products that are sold in herbalist's shop and pharmacy. The course provide theoretical-practical skills to prepare herbal formulations.
Students at the end of the course should be able to recognize and identify the herbal drugs and to know their secondary metabolites responsible of the physiological activity.
The students will prepare in the laboratory herbal preparations starting from herbal extracts prepared during the course.
Topics of pharmaceutical botany and pharmacognosy will be explored to understand how to formulate and sell quality products.
It is advisable to have acquired the knowledge of biology, botany and pharmacognosy in order to be able to follow easily the course.

The final goal is to study the Botanicals, the lines of production of the species of concern, their preparations, the quality control proofs, the transformation procedures.

Educational objectives The Applied Pharmacognosy course aims to provide the student with specific knowledge about herbal drugs in order to allow their application in the pharmaceutical field. In particular, knowledge about production, processing and preparation of herbal drugs, as well as about chemical and pharmacological analysis, will be provided. A peculiar aspect concerns the interest in innovative strategies to be applied to various fields of production and processing of vegetable drugs and their preparations, and their possible impact on the drug quality, and on its phytochemical and pharmacological properties.
The student will be able to apply different technologies to improve the characteristics and quality of plant materials of pharmacognostic interest, as well as to develop novel plant-based products. The knowledge can also be useful for a subsequent research career in the pharmacognostic field.
During the course, the student will be stimulated to formulate judgments and to exercise a critical approach towards the problems studied. The critical approach of the course will allow the student to develop learning autonomy, useful for a subsequent training or for the self-updating.
The course includes mandatory laboratory exercises.

Educational objectives The general aim of this course is to provide students with an appropriate training on the principles and methodologies of studying molecules with pharmacological activities, and their application during the drug development and discovery. At the end of the course, the student will have adequate knowledge on: i) the role of experimental pharmacology in the preclinical and clinical research, ii) the knowledge of the main experimental methods that are used in pharmacological laboratories, iii) elements of statistics for the interpretation of the data contained in scientific publications. During the course the making judgments skills will be frequently assessed through timely and constant interaction during the course classes, also to verify the student communication skills. Moreover, students will be provided with detailed indications for the use of scientific databases and websites of public or private organizations in the area of Pharmacology to develop learning skills necessary for his/her autonomous continuous education in this field.

Educational objectives The first aim of the course of Vegetal food Supplements is to make the students able to recognize and classify food supplements made by, or added with, vegetal extracts, on the basis of their composition and associated activity, The students will be able to recognize and, if possible, solve the problems inherent with formulation inefficacy, instability or toxicity.
General targets
The lectures have the aim to develop the next skills:
Knowledge of the bioactive molecule classes, Knowledge of the natural source by which these molecules could be extracted; knowledge of the formulation and production problems of food supplements, knowledge of the Italian and European laws governing this matter;
Knowledge and presentation of the problems concerning the not proper, not safe or ineffective use of vegetal food supplements, with reference to the different clusters of consumers to which they are devoted
Knowledge of the intrinsic toxicity risks of products of vegetal origin; knowledge of the adverse reaction problems to grant the safe and efficacious use of this product class, promoting human health and ensuring the product efficacy in relation to the expected result.

- to be able to introduce a vegetal food supplement with scientific skills based on the knowledge of the chemical composition and of the chemical stability;
- to be able to evidence the toxicological problems associated to an incorrect use of food supplement, with special regard to the weaker population clusters;
- to be able to evaluate the potential use of wastes from agroindustrial processes to obtain high interesting bioactive molecules.
Autonomy of judgment
The lectures make the student able to:
- elaborate on the technological and practical aspects correlated to the manufacture and storage of food supplements; they will acquire particular attention in the evaluation of the bioactive component modification;
- identify and evaluate the correlated risk s to an incorrect use of this cluster of products;
- identify the real necessity and the safe and effective use of a food supplement with regard to the clusters of population to which the product is directed.
Communication skills
During the lessons, debate and confrontation will be stimulated by the teacher with the aim to verify the capability to communicate and transfer the topics learned. It will encourage the rising of critical skills and will stimulate the deepening of useful themes for the developing of a problem solving methodology.
Autonomous learning ability
The instruments provided to the students in the progress of this course, that represents a course at the choice, in agreement with other mandatory courses, make the students able to enter the world of work with a whole of theoretical and practical knowledge in the food, cosmetic, nutraceutic, pharmaceutic, toxicological fields. These will allow them to face up to practical problems relying on scientific skills.
Particular attention will be addressed to the comprehension of the importance of the constant evolving law and to the socioeconomic aspects related to the trade of food supplements that will constitute indispensable elements educational process of the students of Pharmaceutical Applied Sciences.

Educational objectives Plant Pathology is the discipline that studies the interaction between plants, pathogens and the environment. Safety in food production is one of the hallmarks of global strategies aimed at ensuring food for all for the future. Currently the production of food of plant origin is severely compromised by the increasingly pressing challenge posed by pathogens. These latter directly deplete nutrient resources by deteriorating and sometimes eliminating crops: indirectly worsen the quality of food by forcing farmers to use pesticides and by releasing mycotoxins into the crops, secondary metabolites of fungal origin harmful to humans and animals. The Plant Pathology therefore has as its primary purpose the study of pathogens, of the main defensive strategies of plants, the defensive strategies implemented by man and the recognition of symptoms of the main diseases that put at risk the quantity and quality of agricultural production.
