HISTORY AND THEORY OF SCREENPLAY

Course objectives

The course aims to provide the fundamental principles of screenwriting, applying them to a series of exercises to be carried out in class. The student will also be required to work on screenplays provided by the instructor to learn how to analyze narrative structure and dialogue construction. Finally, the student will be asked to engage with the productive and economic aspects of screenwriting.

Course program
The course is divided into two parts. Part I - History and Theory of Screenwriting The course covers the most important aspects of screenwriting through historical and aesthetic perspective. Topics will include techniques for generating ideas, the drafting process, screenplay structure, conflict, characterization, dialogue, with particular reference to film genre and american cinema. The second part of the course will be dedicated to an analysis of the work of three screenwriters, Billy Wilder, Nora Ephron and Aaron Sorkin. Part II - Screenwriting techniques In the second part, compatibly with the number of attending students, the class will engage in practical writing exercises (rewriting a scene, setting a subject and a pitch, writing dialogues) PAY ATTENTION: Students from other degree courses can take 6 credits with exclusive reference to Part I - HISTORY AND THEORY OF SCREENPLAY
