Programma:
Il tema ricorrente che vede i personaggi britannici e americani in interazioni linguistiche face to face nella stessa storia, che mette in luce i loro diversi background culturali e linguistici, è uno dei più sfruttati  nei film e serie TV occidentali. Le storie che contengono questa contrapposizione spesso esprimono un commento sociale oltre che linguistico: gli americani sono caratterizzati come tipi meno istruiti e più ‘rozzi’, mentre i personaggi britannici appartengono spesso alle classi superiori e sono (di conseguenza) snob raffinati con scarsa empatia umana (Ranzato 2018, 219-23). ​​In termini linguistici, l'interazione tra i due tipi comporta un ampio ricorso ai tipici fraintendimenti provocati dalle differenze lessicali e fonologiche tra le due varietà. Questo contrasto è spesso rafforzato dallo stereotipo del personaggio britannico come "cattivo" in un contesto linguistico prevalentemente americano (ibid., 223).
Il corso esamina le varietà dell'inglese britannico e americano e mira a rafforzare le competenze linguistiche e traduttive degli studenti attraverso l'analisi di film e serie TV in cui l'accento e la cultura statunitense e britannica sono chiaramente messi in primo piano e giustapposti.
Il corso è completato dal lettorato annuale per il secondo anno della magistrale (vedi pagine CLA per dettagli).

The recurring theme of British and American characters in ‘face to face’ linguistic interaction in the same story, which highlights their different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, is one of the most exploited in Western cinema and television. Stories containing this opposition often represent a social as well as a linguistic commentary: Americans are typified as less educated, ‘coarser’ types, while British characters are often members of the upper classes and are consequently posh snobs with little human empathy (Ranzato 2018, 219-23). In linguistic terms, the interaction between the two types involves an ample use of the typical misunderstandings provoked by the lexical and phonological differences between the two varieties. This contrast is frequently reinforced by the stereotype of the British character as ‘the villain’ in a mostly American linguistic context (ibid., 223) 
The course examines the varieties of British and American English and aims to strengthen students' linguistic and translational skills through the analysis of films and TV series in which US and British accents and culture are clearly foregrounded and juxtaposed.
The course is complemented by the second-year magistrale course (see CLA website pages for details).

Il corso verterà sulla traduzione audiovisiva, con un approfondimento della traduzione finalizzata all'accessibilità, in particolare la traduzione dei sottotitoli per non udenti e l'audio descrizione per non vedenti. Oltre alla parte teorica, gli studenti saranno guidati a svolgere esercizi pratici di traduzione e analisi.
The course will focus on audiovisual translation, with a focus on translation for accessibility purposes, particularly the translation of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio description for the blind. In addition to the theoretical part, students will be guided through practical translation and analysis exercises.

This course is also for Erasmus students who need 6 credits.
